Poem of the Day.

The Purpose of Poetry

This old man grazed thirty head of cattle
In a valley just north of the covered bridge
On the Mississinewa, where the reservoir
Stands today. Had a black border collie
And a half-breed sheep dog with one eye.
The dogs took the cows to pasture each morning
And brought them home again at night
And herded them into the barn. The old man
Would slip a wooden bar across both doors.
One dog slept on the front porch, one on the back.

He was waiting there one evening
Listening to the animals coming home
When a man from the courthouse stopped
To tell him how the new reservoir
Was going to flood all his property.
They both knew he was too far up in years
To farm anywhere else. He had a daughter
Who lived in Florida, in a trailer park.
He should sell now and go stay with her.
The man helped bar the doors before he left.

He had only known dirt under his fingernails
And trips to town on Saturday mornings
Since he was a boy. Always he had been around
Cattle, and trees, and land near the river.
Evenings by the barn he could hear the dogs
Talking to each other as they brought in
The herd; and the cows answering them.
It was the clearest thing he knew. That night
He shot both dogs and then himself.
The purpose of poetry is to tell us about life.

Jared Carter

This poem kind of made me understand more about what he did with his life. It sort of made me wonder and question about my life, how I live my life compared to his life. I thought, at the beginning, that maybe he was excited and not worried about anything that might happen to his life and farm. Then once the man from the courthouse came to the door and told him that he needed to leave I knew that something was going to happen. One thing I didn’t think was going to happen was him killing himself. That, to me, came out of the blue.

The Game

This was my first experience reading the books by Diana Wynne Jones. I was very impressed!

Hayley’s parents disappeared when she was a baby.  Since then, she has been raised and homeschooled by her grandparents.  Grandma was a very strict woman.  On the other hand her grandad is an overworked man and travels a lot.

Her neighborhood kids always want her to play a game where they ”visit the mythosphere.”  When she plays The Game she learns more about her own place and her world more than she has ever expected.

“If I give you a hint and tell it’s a hint, it will be information.”  So you should read this book to find out more about this mythosphere world!

Sight Has Been Cancled!!

Sight is a really important to me because I can see where I go, and I can talk to my parents about stuff that I do not want to talk about with friends. If I got invited to my friends house and I knew where it was located but my mom did not, I can tell her where to go. When we get out of school and 3:30 I can go to the bus that I need to go to and not the one that does not drive even close to my house. When my mom calls me to do something for her I can locate her where I need to do stuff or if I need to go to my moms room or something. I am very glad that I have sight so I can do the stuff that I need to do.
Sight is a real good sense to have because if you did not have sight you would probably run into every thing like the walls and if you were walking on the road and if you can’t see you could run into traffic and get hurt or killed. To me if you had no sight I would think what is the point of being alive because you can not do much but sit on the couch and listen to the T.V. and not see anything. If in the morning your mom made you go to school and you were getting dressed you could not see what clothes matched and what did not match. Your shoes could be a blue shoe and a yellow shoe you could not see anything. Say if you were laying in bed and your mom called you and told you to come here you could not even get out of your own room to see where she is. Okay now say if you were at school and you were going to P.E and we play kickball or doge ball you would probably get hit the face by the ball. To me it would stink to not have SIGHT!!

The Day to Remember

The Day to Remember

“Wake up, wake up, wake up Momma and Daddy!!!” I shouted as I was walking in their room.  ”NO!!”  my Daddy said laying down. “Okay  fine but you are waking up in 30 minutes no matter what” I remarked with a little sass going on. 30 minutes later, I replied “ its been 30 minutes get up please!” Then finally they awakened with all the presents in their hand because they thought we would cheat and sneak and go through them! Finally we started to open presents.
I had gotten some pajamas with and penguin hat to go along with it. its very very cozy! I also got boots very fuzzy, clothes, $250, a cute sign to put on my wall that says “girls rock”,a new 42 inch T.V, a lollipop, some cute socks that all kinds of designs on them! I had got a lot  of stuff and goodies.
Then when we got done opening presents we had a wonderful breakfast! It was the best omelet I have ever had in my life! When I got my piece it was not cooling off! so it turned out I had burnt my tongue. It still hurts.
This Christmas was the best I have had in 11 years. I love Christmas!!!!!
